Keep your conversation light and casual: ask him how he is, but don’t pepper him with questions on what he’s been doing (or who he’s been seeing). You can ask about his family, how his job is going, stuff like that. End things on a positive note, whether you’re emailing your ex or talking to him again on the phone. Most of all, keep your contact short. You want to leave some things unsaid, to welcome future conversation. You’re reconnecting here, not updating him on everything that’s happened in your life while he’s been gone. Let him do most of the talking, that way he has lots more to ask you about.
Getting back your ex boyfriend can often be a tricky balancing act. You want to close down the lines of communication enough to get your ex missing you, but keep them just open enough that reconnecting casually is still easy and cool. If you can make your ex feel comfortable around you again, it goes a long way toward improving the chances you’ll get back together with him.
