Go with US detergents that are recommended for cold water, and be careful of European makes, because some of them need hot water. What works well is to start your laundry with cold water, add some of the detergent as it fills up, and then finally put the clothes in. If you add in some baking soda, the amount of soal you need will be less. It’s a common but mistaken belief that agitating the laundry detergent, rather than the water, is what affects the majority of the cleaning. There are natural soaps that do not cause damage to the environment, but you will need to search them out.
Before you spend your money, be sure that you are getting what you are looking for, instead of being duped by marketing. Instead of using a dryer, if possible, hang up your clothes to dry. This can save you a great deal of energy, and consequently money, and your clothes will naturally become whiter with the fresh air and sunlight. Discolorations should also be less of a problem if you choose not to use a dryer, the heat from which can set and seal them in. In addition to the laundry, there are other simple ways to avoid using too much energy, and make your house more green.
Changing the light bulbs is an easy and effective means. You would consume a lot less power by switching your regular lightbulbs for compact flourescent bulbs, which are far more energy-efficient. Along with being better for the environment, doing this will be wonderful for your pocket, by reducing your electricity bill. Cutting down the time you take showers is yet another way. You won’t come out cleaner by showering for an hour than 15 minutes. It will cost you less money as you won’t utilize nearly as much hot water. Not only will you be using much less water, but less electricity for heating it up.
It should be apparent that lights must be switched off when they aren’t in use. This goes for other things that consume power as well. When not used, keep things switched off, such as phone chargers, or even your television. As long as they are plugged in, they will keep on using energy. In the winter, each time you fix your family’s meals, take the opportunity to use your oven as a heater. Once your meal has been cooked, turn the oven off and open the door to allow the heat to escape and warm the room. It is really relatively easy to go green and save electricity at home.
